The Task of Defining Curriculum and Instructional Plans Is an Ongoing Challenge

At a time of increased accountability the task has gained renewed emphasis. Recognizing the need for facilitators to assist schools in navigating through the process, the Mississippi Arts Commission has provided training for a cadre of National Board Certified Teacher in Arts Integrated Curriculum Mapping. This group, called the Navigators, is currently available to work with schools in a variety of ways.

How Do You Begin the Journey?

The work begins with an assessment of the current status of curriculum work in the school and/or district. Based upon this assessment, a plan is developed.

What Route Will You Take?

The Navigators are prepared to help you reach your destination through a variety of routes.

Route One—Overview

This session introduces your faculty to Curriculum Mapping while focusing on the importance and advantages of participation in the process. Approximate Time: 1 Hour / Group Size: Large Group

Route Two—Overview and Interactive Workshop

This session includes the Overview session plus in-depth training and interactive experiences. Approximate Time: 4 Hours / Group Size: Large Group

Route Three—Creating a Curriculum Journal

This work begins with a large group presentation followed by monthly collection of individual teacher Curriculum Journals. This process extends over a school year and precedes development of a Curriculum Map.

Route Four—Curriculum Mapping

This process begins with a review of the previous year’s plan books. The second step involves a same grade/subject team reaching consensus regarding what should be taught each month or grading period, cross-referencing to the Mississippi Frameworks. The final step involves cross-grade level teams identifing redundancies and omissions.

Route Five—Standards-Based Integrated Unit Development

This interactive workshop allows teachers from the same grade level to start the unit development process working in a collaborative session. A possible unit development form is introduced that combines language arts, math, science, social studies, physical education, technology and the arts (music, drama, movement and visual arts). The unit emphasizes the state competencies and strategies for engaging students in learning through interactive instruction. The work may also focus on lesson planning.

Training Local Navigators

The annual weeklong Whole Schools Institute provides an in-depth, intensive training opportunity for teachers and/or administrators to learn from an expert how to lead or assist their school with the process of Curriculum Mapping.
