Althea Jerome, master teacher-former Disney music teacher of the year-and Field Advisory for the Whole Schools Initiative, led two “Lunch and Learn” sessions for Oak Grove Primary teachers and assistant teachers recently.
The OGP teachers were able to observe Mrs. Jerome teaching OGP students master lessons. She shared formal and informal strategies for teachers to infuse music into the curriculum.
“Jerome gave us numerous ideas for incorporating music into our curriculum,” said kindergarten teacher Jane Saul. “My favorite activity involved using chopsticks as musical instruments.”
According to Jerome, a call-response technique increases fluency in speaking and improves fluency with reading skills as well. By using chopsticks, Jerome shares a unique way of integrating music into math and language arts. The students are given instructions and expected to respond. They are taught how to control the volume by using musical terms such as forte and piano.
“I think it would be very beneficial to the children to use the chopsticks when we are counting in groups,” said assistant K-1 teacher Lorie Odom.
Other different techniques shared involve students mirroring teachers or each other. This technique helps with classroom management and concentration.
