This year’s 2013 Whole Schools Initiative Spring Cluster retreats were held in three primary Mississippi school regions: Jackson (2/26), Columbus (2/28), and Meridian (3/07). The WSI Cluster retreats are professional development opportunities for teachers, artists, administrators, and facilitators to discover multiple strategies in which the arts can be integrated into the basic academic classroom. Each school worked in teams as they engaged in group activities, observed a Model Arts Integrated lesson plan, and as teams, created their own grade-adaptive, arts integrated lesson plan. Within the demonstrated Model lesson plans, each school was also able to explore various strategies for “inclusion” classrooms. This year’s retreat focused on the Math Common Core State Standards, principles of Universal Design and arts integration. This event gathered a combined total of 33 participating schools with over 150 teacher/educator representatives (pre-k through 12) from the combined regions. We could not host these retreats without the support of our fine educational institutions of Mississippi, so we would like to offer a special thanks to the host schools: St. Richard Catholic School, Cook Elementary Fine Arts Magnet School and West Lauderdale Elementary. The Whole Schools Initiative extends gratitude to the Mississippi Department of Education, The Phil Hardin Foundation and VSA Mississippi. This program is provided under a contract with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
